What is a PC Answering Machine?
The PC answering machine is an incredible advance in technology. It is something that allows you to use your PC as an answering machine when you are not online. It will display the number that is calling so that you can decide whether or not you want to receive the call that is currently coming in. This is a wonderful use of your computer that will eliminate the need for bulky free standing answering machines or answering machines that have been built into your phone.
The drawback to older answering machines is the fact that they had to use tapes to record the incoming calls. They are not used nearly as often anymore, but they are still available as a cheaper alternative to the digital answering machines. When they first came on the market, the digital answering machines were a bit pricey, but all that is changing now.
With the competition getting fierce between computer, cell phone, and landline phone services, the prices for a digital answering machine are down sharply. A large contributing factor to that has been the introduction to the PC answering service. A drawback of the digital answering machine, though not requiring tapes, is the fact that the inbox can get full. For people that travel often, this can become a problem. Also, a digital answering machine, usually limits you to having to be home to retrieve messages, though some allow you to call in with a code. Voicemail on your landline will also let you use a code to retrieve your messages from elsewhere, but then you have the problem of having yet another set of numbers to memorize.
A PC answering machine will pick up all of your calls and send them to your email. In this way, you will be able to check your messages and delete or save them from just about anywhere that will accommodate a computer and internet access. If you go on vacation for a month, a full inbox will not be a problem because you’ll be able to call in and eliminate the bulk as you go through the messages.
With a PC answering machine, you will be able to see who is calling in on your computer screen. This will allow you to answer the call if you wish or to ignore it. With a PC answering machine you will not be able to receive messages while you are online. If you choose to ignore a call, it will be ignored; the caller will not be able to leave a message because you are online. If you want your PC answering machine to get a call, you’ll have to disconnect from the internet in order for your answering machine to receive the call.
A PC answering machine is a wonderful invention that brings us one step closer to Jetson-like communication. Speaking to video screens instead of phone receivers is not far off and it will be a welcome invention when it arrives. For now, the PC answering machine works wonders to help us communicate well and quickly with one another.

How do I upload VHS tapes to my desktop PC?
I have a Dell Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz - 1 Gig Ram. It has the video and sound cards that came with it from the factory. How can I upload VHS tapes to my hard drive? I have a 300 Gig internal HD and another 300 Gig external HD. I plan to keep movies on the external HDs rather than VHS or DVD. I prefer to save them as MPEG but avi or mp4 would be OK.
I would like a low price solution if possible. Also I prefer any new hardware to be external if possible.
Pinnacle systems makes a very good hardware/software package. I believe the name of the product is Dazzle, and the hardware is external.
