How to Change a DC Adapter for a Laptop -- go-shop.com.au
Personal computers (PC) and mobile devices such as laptops operate off of direct current (DC) energy. Standard household jacks, and almost all businesses in the United States make use of alternating (AC) current. This means that all computers need a special adapter (power supply) that will temporarily store a charge from the AC current to provide an even flow of energy to the DC input jack. These power supplies are composed of a multi-wire cord connecting to an AC/DC adapter, which then has a single direct-current cord that leads to the laptops DC input jack. If your laptop has trouble charging, or the light on your AC/DC adapter no longer turns on (they get very hot and burn out easily), it must be replaced.
Instructions
Step 1
Use the internet to select the proper power supply for your computer. Entering the model number of your laptop such as "Toshiba Satellite A505" and the words "Power Supply" in a search engine will result in a list of products you can use to replace your faulty power supply.

Special price: AU $47.34
Use the information you glean from your Internet search to purchase the proper replacement power supply. The best deals are typically online or direct from the manufacturer, but it is more convenient to go to a retail store to get a replacement part immediately.
Step 3
Disconnect your old power supply from the laptop. This includes the entire power cable and AC/DC adapter. You may be able to reuse the cords of your old unit, such as if they are longer.
Replacement Laptop AC Adapter for HP COMPAQ Business Notebook nc8430, Business Notebook nx7400
Special price: AU $46.69
Step 4
Assemble the new power supply that you purchased earlier. The AC cord connects to the AC/DC adapter, which connects to the DC cord, which finally connects to the laptop.
Step 5
Check the light on the AC/DC adapter is lit. This will indicate that the power supply is receiving power. You should also check your Windows desktop in the lower right hand toolbar for a power charging icon; it will look like a battery with a lightning bolt flashing on it.

Phone AC/DC adaptor vs computer usb.?
Hi, so an AC/DC adaptor that came with my pantech laser for me to plug my usb charger cable in outputs: 5V --- 1A, doesn't that mean it outputs 1000mA? So does this mean that it is better for me to use the usb adaptor that came with my phone rather than the computer usb because computer usb's only output 500mA, or is it the same? haha Thanks.
Thanks Jase for your answer, but one quick question, so what you mean is it is the same if both are 5V, it's just that the 500mA usb port will take longer to charge then the 1000mA adapter right?
THanks again.
Hi. Yes, in terms of output "current", 1A is the same as 1000mA.
The current you supply actually depends on the device. You should use the adaptor's output current (1A) as a guide. You can go higher, but is not a good idea to go lower. So I would say plugging it into the USB port *may* cause issues if the device is wanting more than what the USB can supply - which is 500mA... you could even overload the USB port.
I would recommend using the device's original charger, just incase.
As with voltage, you must supply 5 volts.
Hope this helps.
Edit: The 500mA current from the USB *might be ok* and not cause issues, but the charge may take up to twice as long, yes.
